Moving into colour in the Gambia

PC030154

For quite a time, I’ve preferred to work in black and white for my portraits- I love the contrast that black and white brings, but also if I am honest, as a colour blind photographer, I fear that I might get colour wrong.

But recently, I spent some time looking at the amazing colour photography of Steve McCurry (he of the Afghan Girl) and was goaded out of my monochrome slumber.

I’ve tried out a new technique of my own invention where I essentially mix different edited versions of the colour image to bring out the contrast as I might do in Black and White, but with the admitted risk of over saturating.

I started with some new ones from my most recent trip to the Gambia as with the ones above, but soon I went back to try the same on some old favourites.

On the rest of this page, I’ve included both the original black and whites and the colour versions for comparison.
